1 Arts Bundanoon Audience Survey Findings of Fact, Conclusions and Recommendations on the survey:

Findings of Fact

A questionnaire was handed out on 4th June 2016 at Music at 10 (see pages 3-4). The “tick the box” survey format resulted in a high response rate with 36/40 questionnaires having been answered. This number corresponded to almost half of the audience present on the day. Not all questions were answered but most were. Only a minority of respondents wrote in comments. Most questionnaires were answered by individuals but a minority of responses came from two people, so it could be said that more than half of the audience participated in the survey. The results were too few in number for many correlations to be worthwhile but here are some highlights: -

only three of 36 respondents self-identified as NOT users of the internet or e-mail. -

33 respondents identified as users of the internet or e-mail but five respondents answered “No” to all internet/e-mail questions, suggesting that they are indeed non-users.

All 3 self-identified non-users supported street signage and one commented on relying upon the 1st Saturday of the month. -

It is therefore reasonable to say that 5 of 33 respondents who claimed access to the Internet & e-mail are not actually users of internet & e-mail (making a total of 8/36 of the audience’s responses received) and that the remainder (28/36 or 77%) do have some level of access. -

28 individuals answered at least one question on page 2 (i.e. regarding internet or e-mail) in the affirmative. - print media has little usage: only 4 respondents noticed print media advertising/information and three of these did find it useful. The figures for Radio were similarly dismal - 3 and 3 respectively. Non-Internet/e-mail users: all 3 of 3 self-identified non-users noticed posters in shops, two of three noticed the street signs and only one noticed radio announcements. None of three looked at print media. “Inferred” non-users included another 5 respondents. Internet/e-mail users:

There was consistency in the answers to some questions. 15/28 answered Yes to both parts of Q. 6 (Arts Bundanoon’s reminder e-mails); 3/28 answered Yes only to part 1 and 15/28 to both parts of Question 7 (BCA’s reminder e-mails); 15/28 answered Yes to both parts of Q. 8 (Arts Bundanoon’s web site); and, 6/28 answered Yes only to part 1 and 5/28 to both parts of Question 11 (Destination Southern Highlands’ web site).

The last set of answers (Q. 11) needs to be considered in terms of its accuracy. As of today (4th June) there are no forward Music at 10 events on the site).

There was major inconsistency in the answer to Question 10: 15/28 respondents said that they visited the BCA’s web site and only 4 found it NOT to be useful; ten respondents said it IS useful. This claim of usefulness cannot be correct for the website is very much out of date (the Calendar shows 2014, Christine Miller and Kathy Wade still hold offices).

Only one of 28 respondents used our Facebook site, finding it useful. Facebook is a relatively new area of publicity for Arts Bundanoon.

Print media and Radio are little used by our audience.

2 Conclusions:

Here is a simple, partly qualitative analysis but the results are informative. 1. Most respondents do have Internet and e-mail access. Among these people, there is strong support for the Arts Bundanoon web site and e-mails. Five respondents asked to go on our mailing list. The Facebook site may be too little known – it had only one supporter - but one negative comment about Facebook was made, consistent with resistance to the use of social media in the general population. There is a large amount of reliance on the BCA’s emails but the claimed utility of the BCA’s web site must be incorrect. 2. A minority of our audience (perhaps 8 of 36 at the most) do not have Internet and e-mail access and there is support by these people for physical signage & posters. Recommendations: R1. There is little use of Radio or print media. This area of publicity should be terminated. That will save volunteers’ time. R2. Internet and e-mail users should be encouraged at least to join our mailing list or the BCA’s mailing list. Arts Bundanoon’s web site is very well worth keeping up to date. It is generally wellknown that the BCA’s web site has “room for improvement”. Destination Southern Highlands’ web site has some usage so should be supported by Arts Bundanoon for the time being. On workload grounds, we should stop producing tailored publicity for other avenues – our website should be harvested by third parties who wish to publicise our events. Facebook is probably worth supporting for at least another year. R3. Non-users of the Internet and e-mail need to be told of where to find posters (fewer could be distributed if they were consistently & reliably accessible, saving printing costs and some volunteer time). Non-users can be reminded of our planned, if erratically implemented, shift to the second Saturday of the month for 2017. Non-users of the Internet and e-mail will not miss print media or radio because they are not significant users of these media. A handout can be prepared for nonusers of the Internet and e-mail to help them to find our posters. R4. Street signs are supported overall by our audience, so their use should continue for the time being.
